Bishkek: The Gateway to Kyrgyzstan

Our journey into Kyrgyzstan began with a quick and easy 30km taxi ride from Manas International Airport to Bishkek, the country’s bustling capital. Bishkek is a city that invites you to take your time wandering through its leafy parks, wide boulevards, and streets adorned with remnants of Soviet-era statues and monuments. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine effortlessly, making it an ideal destination to explore in a day or two.

Ala-Too Square

At the heart of Bishkek lies Ala-Too Square, a symbolic and central gathering spot for both locals and tourists. The name “Ala-Too,” meaning “great mountain” in Kyrgyz, reflects the country’s awe-inspiring mountainous landscapes. The square is perfect for a leisurely stroll, capturing photos, or simply people-watching. In the evenings, the square transforms with a vibrant musical fountain show that adds a lively charm to the city’s nightlife.

Sakura Guesthouse

During our stay, we checked into Sakura Guesthouse, a cozy haven run by a warm Kyrgyz-Japanese family. For just USD 19 per person, we stayed in a comfortable twin room. The guesthouse features a charming garden, a terrace perfect for unwinding, and shared kitchen facilities for those who like to cook. With free WiFi and the friendly hospitality of the hosts, it felt like a home away from home.

Osh Bazaar

No visit to Bishkek is complete without diving into the sensory overload of Osh Bazaar. This iconic marketplace is a sprawling maze of stalls selling everything from fresh produce, fragrant spices, and traditional bread to vibrant carpets, wooden trunks, and unique souvenirs. It’s the perfect spot to stock up on locally made goods or simply soak in the hustle and bustle of daily life in Bishkek.

Bishkek may not overwhelm you with grandeur, but its laid-back charm and the hospitality of its people leave a lasting impression. Whether you’re strolling through Ala-Too Square, haggling at Osh Bazaar, or relaxing at a guesthouse like Sakura, the capital city provides a warm introduction to the wonders of Kyrgyzstan.
