Getting to Sary Chelek from Bishkek isn’t the easiest journey, especially via public transport. After considering our options, we decided to hire a private car for the trip. The agreed price was USD 80 for the entire car, but upon arrival, the driver demanded an additional USD 20, claiming it was for extra petrol costs. While it was frustrating, it didn’t overshadow the beauty of the journey itself.
The drive, which takes about nine hours on average, was nothing short of stunning. We passed through winding mountain roads, dotted with picturesque villages and lush green landscapes. Along the way, we stopped at a yurt camp for a much-needed lunch break. The sight of traditional yurts against the dramatic mountain backdrop was a delightful introduction to Kyrgyz culture. The food, simple yet hearty, was the perfect fuel to continue our journey.
As we got closer to Arkit, the nearest village to Sary Chelek, the scenery grew even more breathtaking. The towering peaks of the Chatkal Range loomed ahead, and the air felt noticeably fresher and cooler. Arkit itself, with its peaceful vibe and friendly locals, was a welcoming stop before heading to the lake.
Whether you opt for public transport, hitchhiking, or a private car, the journey from Bishkek to Sary Chelek is an adventure in itself. The changing landscapes, the cultural encounters, and the anticipation of reaching one of Kyrgyzstan’s most beautiful lakes make it a memorable experience.
