Sary Chelek: A Tranquil Escape in Kyrgyzstan

Sary Chelek is one of Kyrgyzstan’s true hidden gems. Nestled in the western part of the country, it’s the perfect stop-over if you’re traveling between Bishkek and Osh. While getting there requires a bit of effort, the journey is absolutely worth it. Whether you take a day trip or decide to camp overnight by the lake, Sary Chelek offers a serene retreat surrounded by nature’s finest.

Getting There and Nearby Villages

The village of Arkit (or Arkyt) lies to the south of the lake, about 15 km away, and serves as the main gateway to Sary Chelek. It’s the most accessible option if you’re using public transport. From Arkit, you can arrange transport or hike to the lake. Another village, Kara-Suu, is also an option, but it requires a two-day trek to reach Sary Chelek—perfect for those seeking a more adventurous route.

In Arkit, we stayed in a cozy place called Siberia guesthouse, which is filled with the cheerful laughter of children. They were a delight to meet, always eager to have their photo taken and share their infectious joy.

If you’re planning to leave Arkit, a marshrutka departs at 6 a.m. to Bazar-Korgon, costing 250 som per person.

The Hike to Sary Chelek

The hike to the lake is fairly easy, making it accessible even if you’re not an experienced trekker. Just as the trail begins, you’ll pass by a quaint little mosque, beautifully sits with the surrounding natural scenery. It’s a serene spot to pause and take in the peaceful vibe of the area before continuing your journey.

The path winds through scenic landscapes, offering plenty of photo-worthy moments along the way. For those feeling tired or looking to save some time, vans and buses often pass by heading in the same direction. Hitching a ride is common and a welcome break if the trek starts to feel long.

Camping by the Lake

When we reached the lake, we were tired and hungry from the hike, and luckily, the local tourists by the shore came to our rescue. In true Kyrgyz hospitality, they invited us to join their meal without hesitation. Their warmth was undeniable—they wouldn’t let us leave the table until every dish was finished! Between bites of delicious local food and shared laughter, it felt like we had found an unexpected family away from home.

As the evening progressed, we started to pitch our tent. Camping by its shore was the perfect way to unwind after the day’s adventure. The sky turned shades of intense blue, while the gentle rustling of trees added to the tranquil atmosphere. Under a blanket of stars, brighter than we could ever imagine, the experience was nothing short of magical.

Sary Chelek wasn’t just about stunning scenery; it was about the connections we made—with nature, with people, and with the moment. That night by the lake was a blend of heartfelt hospitality and peaceful solitude, making it a memory to treasure forever.
